Oasis: Switch with Chip Heath, January 14

You may have met Chip Heath before. He’s Aubrey and Emory’s dad. Most Sundays, he can be found leading the discussion in Parents’ Connection. His lovely wife, Susan, has led small groups at the Tuesday Bible Study and participated in MOPS. But did you also know that Chip Heath is a Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University? He is the co-author of Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard, which debuted at #1 on the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. The Heath brothers previously co-wrote the critically acclaimed book Made to Stick, which was named the Best Business Book of the Year.

Chip is also a columnist for Fast Company magazine, and he has spoken and consulted on the topics of change and "making ideas stick" with major corporations all over the world.

Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems—the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort—but if it is overcome, change can come quickly.

At Oasis on January 14, Chip will discuss how everyday people—employees and managers, parents and nurses—have united both minds and, as a result, achieved dramatic results.

Have you been to Oasis? It is a place to retreat - to get away from the ordinary and annoying. A haven. A refuge. A place to connect and rejuvenate. A place to recharge.

Do you need an Oasis? Oasis is a place for all women—women who work, women who are raising kids, single women and retired women. No matter what your age or situation, Oasis is for YOU. Monthly, 9-11am in the Oak Room. To RSVP for childcare call 378-4900, x264.
